PCMCIA Adapter fails "Code 31" in Windows Device Manager
This problem effects all CardBus controller based adapters*. After installation of the PSeries driver and the card reader hardware, the Device Manager shows the PCI 1xxx CardBus Controller with a yellow exclamation mark. In Windows 2000/XP, if you open the device properties, the error "Code 31" is displayed. In other operating systems a different error code may appear.

This problem may effect any motherboard, but is only known to effect Fujitsu-Siemens Scenic PC models D1387, D1192 & D1219. It may also effect other models in the Fujitsu-Siemens Scenic range.
The reason for the failure is the BIOS does not assign an IRQ to the CardBus controller during boot. The BIOS also does not support PCI BIOS IRQ steering AND the BIOS does not contain a MS IRQ Routing table. PC's from other manufacturers may also fail if the same BIOS errors exist.
There is nothing Elan or Microsoft can do to rectify the problem. Contact the motherboard manufacturer for a BIOS update.
